Davinder Sandhu

Davinder started her ideal job in May 2001 in the Education sector, but within 9 months she reluctantly resigned due to continuous bullying and harassment. Davinder was unable to take any legal action due to have less than 12 months service, which is the legal minimum for bringing an Employment Tribunal claim for Unfair Constructive Dismissal in the UK.

By March 2002, she applied for and successfully gained a Millennium Award to produce a booklet on surviving workplace bullying. The sponsorship of the Council of Ethnic Minority Voluntary Sector Organisations enabled Davinder to translate the booklet into Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.

She officially launched the booklet at City Hall - the new one - in London. This successful event was attended by many people and Davinder was praised for her efforts by all of the speakers, including Atma Singh, Policy Advisor to the Mayor of London on Asian Affairs and Tim Field, Field Foundation.

This book is remarkable because it is written by someone who has used her experience of being bullied to try to empower others. It will be a source of invaluable advice and practical help in dealing with bullying at work.
For speakers of English as a second language the difficulties of confronting any issue of discrimination increases ten fold. By the book being available in three community languages it can be used by numerous organisation and individuals to advise members of diverse communities.

Since the booklet was launched, Davinder sold out of the original print and had to order a further batch due its success! Sales are still going very strong and the Metropolitan Police recently ordered a large batch. Maybe you would like to forward details of the booklet to your employer?! This survivors guide is certainly recommended for those who are struggling to know which way to turn.

Copies of Davinder's booklet are available in English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu. They copy £4.25 each and can be ordered either from Davinder or from:

Davinder now has an exciting and challenging new job with a local authority managing literacy, numeracy and English programmes for adults. You will be pleased to hear that she now feels appreciated, supported and valued, which has restored her faith in some people at work.

Having experienced first hand being bullied at the hands of an unfair system which does not do enough to protect the bullied, Davinder is committed to raising the profile of workplace bullying until there is dignity and respect at work for all. I am sure you will join me in wishing her every success.
