Hypnotherapy
What
is hyponotherapy? by Damian Stoupe
It
is simple to say what it is not – it is not what
you see Paul McKenna and the hundreds of stage hypnotists
doing on a Saturday night up and down the country. The difference
and the emphasis is on the word therapy. What you seen on
a stage is entertainment.
Hypnotherapy is not entertainment it is a serious and recognised
method for helping individuals with issues in their lives.
It is a totally natural state that we enter many times a
day. It is a state of inner absorption, concentration and
focussed attention. Imagine how many times you have driven
from one pace to another and suddenly realised that you have
passed through somewhere and not realised it? This is what
is known as autohypnosis.
Under
the guidance of a professional hypnotherapist you can enter
this relaxed state and obtain benefits that you
could only have imagined previously. In fact it is your imagination,
and commitment, that is the key to hypnotherapy working.
You cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do,
you are always in control. If I could truly take over your
mind during hypnosis then I would be talking to my bank manager
right now – not writing this note!
It can literally be a liberating experience; you can become
a new person, free of those habits and fears that have caused
so much pain in your life.
This
process of hypnotherapy, or being self-conscious, makes
it possible for changes to take place on a very deep level,
whereby a big shift can take place in a relatively short
time. The aim is a short period of therapy, between three
and ten sessions depending on the problem. The frequency
and the methods are discussed with the client. The sessions
take place every week. Every session is a step forward in
personal growth. Every session has a particular value of
its own and in the wider context of the whole therapy process.
The client is always central in the therapy. The client is
unique and at no stage is the client judged; in essence it
is the therapists’ role to ensure that the client is
respected and shown unconditional positive regard.
Whilst you are in an hypnotic state a professional therapist
can:
- Encourage you to use your imagination. When the mind
is focussed it becomes a very powerful tool, which
can be used to bring about desired changes.
- Provide
you with suggestions. In a state of concentrated attention,
ideas and suggestions that are compatible with
what you want seem to have a more powerful impact on the
mind
- Help
you to understand whether there are any underlying motivations,
past events, or experiences, that are contributing
to a present day problem.
There are many issues that can be helped through hypnosis,
allowing you to shape your own future from removing
